IMEIB was established in 1993 following the receipt of a certificate of establishment from the Ministry of Trade/Companies Registration Office and a money exchange license from the CBI. Banking operations commenced on May 8, 1994, with an initial capital of IQD 400 million, which has since increased significantly. At present, the recorded and paid-up capital stands at IQD 250 billion, a noteworthy increase achieved through annual capitalizations and contributions from shareholders.

The bank has been consistently recognized for its performance, having achieved the First-Grade (1C) ranking among Iraqi Private Banks according to the International CAMEL System for four consecutive years (2007-2008-2009-2010). In 2017, IMEIB obtained a (3A) classification. Furthermore, IMEIB boasts an established Anti-Money Laundering Unit in compliance with Law No. 93 of 2015 and CBI's directives. The bank has also been designated with a rank of (B+) based on assessments carried out by the Central Bank of Iraq, reflecting its adherence to regulations and standards for combating money laundering and terrorism financing.
